Mobility Management travel training helps students understand public transportation

One role of Great Lakes Community Action Partnership’s Mobility Management team is to help people become more comfortable with using public transportation through travel training, which promotes greater independence for those who need access to public transportation for school, work, recreation and other needs.

GLCAP Mobility Management staff began a unique opportunity this past October for a partnership with Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority/Toledo Area Regional Paratransit Authority to provide travel training for high school students at Whitmer High School in Toledo. Mobility Management began hosting the monthly travel training sessions in October and will host sessions through May 2020.

Students attending the sessions include juniors and seniors who participate in job training programs through Whitmer, as well as students who are on individualized education programs or receive services through the county’s board of developmental disabilities.

“Having access to transportation means having independence,” GLCAP Mobility Management Coordinator Kristen Gerwin said. “We want to ensure that students in this program understand how to use their own public transportation system to help them gain that independence, especially as they come closer to completing their high school careers."

By the end of the training, students will be able to plan a trip for the class to ride TARTA from their school to a destination of their choice in Toledo.

Gerwin said she hopes to use the partnership program to develop a high school travel training curriculum that can be duplicated in other school districts. GLCAP’s Mobility Management program serves Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca and Wood counties.
