Weatherization Day showcases WarmChoice program

Open-blow attic insulation is one of the methods used during the weatherization
process to reduce heat loss in weatherized homes.

Nearly 1,100 homes in Ohio were made more energy-efficient last year through weatherization services supported through Columbia Gas of Ohio’s WarmChoice program.

One of those homes was on display Oct. 27 as part of a Weatherization Day event in Hebron, Ohio.

Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) in partnership with Columbia Gas of Ohio and LEADS Community Action Agency (LEADS CAA) hosted the event to demonstrate the weatherization process and explain the benefits weatherization offers for residents.

The home was one of 1,097 WarmChoice-supported Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) projects throughout Ohio in 2025. GLCAP provides the WarmChoice service in 25 of 57 counties in Columbia Gas of Ohio’s WarmChoice region. Within its own 25-county WarmChoice area, GLCAP contracts with eight partnering organizations to provide weatherization, including LEADS CAA, which weatherized the Hebron residence.

“GLCAP’s partnership with Columbia Gas helps us extend our outreach for weatherization services,” GLCAP Housing, Energy, & Workforce Director Ragan Claypool said. “Support through WarmChoice also helps offset the cost per weatherized residence, again giving partners like GLCAP the ability to help more households than we could through HWAP dollars alone.”

“Weatherization is about more than reducing energy costs,” LEADS CAA Community Services Director Doug Pearl added. “It helps families live in safer, healthier, and more comfortable homes while making their energy bills more manageable. Partnerships like the one behind WarmChoice allow us to stretch available resources, reach more households, and make a lasting difference in the communities we serve.”

HWAP, a program funded through the U.S. Department of Energy since 1976, is provided to help reduce home energy usage and help residents spend less on utilities. The program is free to income-eligible residents through various service providers throughout the state of Ohio, assisting eligible households at or below 200% federal poverty guidelines (e.g. $66,000 for a household of 4).

At Weatherization Day, LEADS CAA and GLCAP staff discussed and demonstrated insulation methods, furnace inspection, infrared testing and other aspects of weatherization.

Weatherization services typically include:
•    Exterior wall, attic, and crawlspace insulation
•    Repair or replacement of heating/cooling system
•    Repair or replacement of water heaters
•    Installing duct wrap
•    Heating/combustion appliance safety testing
•    Installing low-flow showerheads
