Safe, Reliable Water on the Horizon for Fairview and Hendrysburg
After decades of relying on private wells and years of community advocacy, construction is beginning on the Barnesville North Waterline Extension Project, bringing new hope to residents of Fairview, Hendrysburg, and the surrounding Mt. Olivett Road area.
Nestled among the rolling hills of eastern Ohio, the communities of Fairview and Hendrysburg have deep roots stretching back generations. Hendrysburg was established in the early 1800s along the historic National Road corridor, while Fairview grew into a close-knit rural community supported by local businesses, churches, schools, and family farms. For decades, these communities thrived on the strength of their residents and the connections between neighbors.
But despite their rich history, many residents have faced a challenge that much of modern America takes for granted: reliable access to safe drinking water.
For years, households throughout Fairview, Hendrysburg, and the surrounding rural areas have depended on private wells. As infrastructure aged and groundwater conditions changed, many residents began experiencing ongoing concerns with water quality, water quantity, and system reliability. Families often found themselves managing the uncertainty of well maintenance, fluctuating water production, and concerns about the long-term sustainability of their water supply. Local leaders and residents understood that reliable public water service was essential to preserving the future of their communities.
Recognizing this need, community members, local officials, funding agencies, and regional partners came together to develop a long-term solution. Through years of planning, engineering, grant applications, and coordination, the Barnesville North Waterline Extension Project was born.
The project will extend public water service from the Village of Barnesville to areas along Mt. Olivett Road, Hendrysburg, and the Village of Fairview. In addition to providing a dependable source of drinking water to homes currently served by private wells, the project will create a water system loop designed to improve water quality and reliability throughout the region. Planned improvements also include a new booster station and a new filling station that will strengthen service for years to come.
This investment represents more than new waterlines beneath the ground. It represents an investment in people. Reliable public water service helps protect public health, supports local economic development, enhances property values, and provides peace of mind for families. It creates opportunities for future growth while allowing longtime residents to remain in the communities they love.
The project is the result of a collaborative effort involving the Village of Barnesville, Belmont County, Guernsey County, the Village of Fairview, Great Lakes Community Action Partnership/Rural Community Assistance Partnership (GLCAP/RCAP), the Ohio Department of Development, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and numerous local stakeholders. Through the combination of state, federal, and local resources, partners have worked together to make a long-envisioned project a reality.
As construction begins, residents can look forward to visible progress and the start of a new chapter for their communities.
For generations, Fairview and Hendrysburg have endured and adapted through changing times. Now, with the Barnesville North Waterline Extension Project moving from planning into construction, the region is taking an important step toward ensuring that future generations have access to one of life's most essential resources: safe, reliable drinking water.
What began as a vision has become a project. Soon, it will become a lasting legacy for the families and communities of Fairview and Hendrysburg.
