Home Rehabilitation program helps local homeowners

I’m a young retiree," said Theresa Rodriguez. "I’m still young and mobile, and what a peace of mind this gave me."

She may be a retiree, but Theresa Rodriguez certainly is still young. In her early 60s, Theresa is looking forward to enjoying many good years to come in her home. With new repairs to her home’s roof, furnace and other areas, she now feels secure in knowing that the home will stay as healthy as she is.

Like many homeowners who seek Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) Community Home Rehabilitation program assistance, Theresa did not know that the program existed until her home’s leaky roof motivated her to research available repair options.

"Someone I knew had work done [through GLCAP] and recommended checking into it," Theresa said.

Though the roof was Theresa’s main concern, her home had other issues — an old, inefficient furnace, outdated electrical wiring and improperly placed handrails, to name a few. Through the Home Rehabilitation program, Theresa’s home received these and other repairs to ensure that it remains safe and efficient for years to come.

Through the CHIP and Ohio Housing Trust Fund Emergency Repair programs, GLCAP Housing & Energy Department assisted 222 northwest Ohio residents like Theresa with needed home repairs such as plumbing and electrical upgrades, ADA modifications, and other fixes at no cost in 2016. The programs create safe, livable residences for fixed-income individuals and families who may not be able to afford home repairs.

"CHIP ensures that houses don’t fall into disrepair or become hazardous if a homeowner cannot afford to make repairs," Housing & Energy Director Terry Jacobs said. "Retired persons, seniors, disabled individuals and others on limited incomes can especially benefit from home rehabilitation."

"One of the things I appreciate about having the repairs is that I know the house is up to state code," Rodriguez said. "It makes you appreciate all of the work that was done. I would never have been able to do that all at one time."

For Theresa, the GLCAP Home Rehabilitation program has given her the comfort of knowing her home will be in good condition for years to come.

"It’s a wonderful program," she said. "It makes me feel safe in my home."
