Housing Assistance program helps local family maintain stability during crisis

A local mother who faced housing instability following an unexpected family crisis says assistance from Great Lakes Community Action Partnership’s (GLCAP) Housing Assistance Program helped her family remain safe, maintain housing and regain financial stability during one of the most challenging periods of their lives.

As communities across the country observe Homelessness Awareness Month in November, GLCAP is highlighting how housing support services can help individuals and families navigate unexpected hardships. The mother, who asked that her name not be shared due to the sensitive nature of her circumstances, left her home unexpectedly with her children to ensure their safety.

For nearly a month, the family moved between a relative’s home, a hotel and a short-term rental while working to establish a stable living situation. During that time, she used much of her savings to cover temporary housing and other essential expenses.

Although she was eventually able to return home, the financial strain continued.

“The assistance I received allowed me to continue working, maintain a household for my children and keep moving forward until we were able to get back on our feet,” she said.

The family later encountered additional unexpected expenses, including vehicle repairs. Without assistance, she believes she could have lost her housing during the winter months.

GLCAP family advocate Michelle Foster worked closely with the family, helping them connect with resources and navigate the assistance process.

For the mother, the support meant more than just financial relief.

“Throughout the process, I genuinely appreciated being treated with respect, compassion and understanding,” she said. “Thank you for treating me like a person, not just an application or a set of eligibility requirements.”

Family advocates like Foster work with individuals and families experiencing housing instability to identify available resources, develop plans for long-term stability and connect them with supportive services tailored to their needs.

“Our goal is to help people find safe, stable housing and provide the support they need to move forward,” Foster said. “Every situation is different, and sometimes a relatively short period of assistance can make the difference between a temporary hardship and a housing crisis.”

For this family, that support helped provide a path forward during an uncertain time.

“I am incredibly grateful for the support we received and for the role GLCAP played in helping my family get through a challenging time,” she said. “Your assistance can mean the difference between simply surviving a difficult season and being able to come through it with some stability intact.”
