GLCAP celebrates National Senior Center Month

Great Lakes Community Action Partnership is celebrating National Senior Center Month this September by highlighting the people, programs and connections that make Sandusky County’s three senior centers special.

This year’s National Senior Center Month theme is “Happiest Birthdays Happen Here,” a celebration of the joy, friendship and sense of belonging that senior centers provide to older adults throughout the year.

GLCAP operates senior centers in Clyde, Fremont and Gibsonburg, providing adults age 60 and older with opportunities to socialize, stay active, learn new skills and participate in a variety of programs and activities.

While meals, exercise classes, educational programs, games and special events are important components of senior center programming, the benefits extend beyond the activities themselves. Senior centers provide opportunities for older adults to maintain social connections, develop friendships and remain engaged in their communities.

“Senior centers are about so much more than activities,” said Robin Richter, GLCAP senior services director. “They are places where people know your name, where friendships are formed and where people look forward to seeing one another. That sense of connection is so important as we age.”

Each of GLCAP’s three senior centers has its own personality and unique community, shaped by the seniors and staff who walk through its doors each day.

To celebrate Senior Center Month, GLCAP is featuring its three senior center supervisors in a series of videos highlighting what makes each location special. The videos provide a closer look at each center and the relationships that make them an important part of the Sandusky County community. Watch those videos here:

“Every center has its own personality, but what they all have in common is the people,” Richter said. “Our seniors bring their stories, their humor, their talents and their experiences through the doors every day. Our staff are fortunate to be part of that.”

The theme “Happiest Birthdays Happen Here” serves as a reminder that celebrating life and creating meaningful connections should not be limited to one day a year. At GLCAP’s senior centers, those celebrations happen through everyday conversations, shared meals, new friendships, activities and memories made together.
