Enrollment continues as Head Start celebrates 60 years

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Head Start program—the nation’s most well-known early childhood education program that ensures all children have access to preschool.

That tradition continues as Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) continues to enroll the next generation of Head Start students in its 2025-2026 school year classes.

“While the school year is already underway, we want families to know that they may enroll their children at any time in our Head Start programs,” GLCAP Child Development Director Jacquie Wells said.

Head Start offers no-cost, all-day early education for eligible families. GLCAP’s early childhood centers are located in Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, and Wood counties. Additional opportunities are available at partner sites in the same region. Along with full-day preschool, Head Start provides meals and snacks; health, vision, and dental screenings; family engagement opportunities; and more for children and parents.

Families are eligible for Head Start if household income is at or below federal poverty guidelines (e.g. $32,150 annual income/family of four). Children who are in foster care or experiencing homelessness, as well as children from families receiving SNAP benefits or other public assistance are also eligible. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to call for details.

Last year, GLCAP served 1,785 children in its Head Start programs (including Early Head Start, Home-Based, and Migrant & Seasonal Head Start).
