A daily ride, a lasting impact: Jay's story with TRIPS

For 25 years, TRIPS Public Transportation has been more than just a way to get from point A to point B. It has been a connection to independence, opportunity, and community. Few stories capture that impact better than Jay’s.
If you’ve spent time around town, chances are you’ve seen Jay, famously referred to by many as “Mr. Fremont.” He is cheering at high school sporting events, visiting the farmers market, enjoying local restaurants, and greeting people everywhere he goes. Jay knows his community, and his community knows him.
Jay has worked at Fremont’s 818 Club for 36 years, a milestone that reflects his dedication, consistency, and pride in his work. Just as steady has been his relationship with TRIPS Public Transportation. Jay says he has been riding TRIPS for as long as he can remember, using the service daily to get to work and to stay connected to the places and people he enjoys most.
TRIPS driver Joe Sheak, who has been driving Jay for the past five years, describes him as dependable and always ready for the day. “Jay never misses work,” Sheak said. “He’s always in a good mood and ready to go.”
That reliability is echoed by Deb Kohler, owner of Kohler’s 818 Club. “The 818 Club wouldn’t be the same without Mr. Fremont,” Kohler shared. “He gets up every weekday, rides TRIPS to work, and does his job.”
Known for his outgoing personality and positive spirit, “Mr. Fremont” is always ready to say hello and often asks to snap a selfie to share on Facebook. His presence is a reminder of how meaningful everyday connections can be.
As TRIPS celebrates its 25-year anniversary, Jay’s story highlights why public transportation matters. It supports workers, strengthens local businesses, encourages community participation, and helps people stay connected.
For a quarter century, TRIPS has helped residents live full, active, and connected lives. With every ride, that mission continues. Learn more about TRIPS services at glcap.org/trips.
