Job Corps Scholars grad working towards game design career
Some day, Steven Richardson would like to be a video game developer. It’s a job that many young men and women would love to have.
As he scrolls through hand-drawn artwork he’s made, digital designs of characters he’s created, and colorful backgrounds on a website he’s built as part of his college coursework, it’s apparent that Steven is much closer to his dream job to just call it a “dream.”
Steven started his studies at Terra State Community College in interactive media in August 2020, taking classes in graphic design, video production, and other courses. After graduating on May 6 with his certification from Terra State, Steven is now ready to take the next step.
Job Corps Scholars, a program of Terra State and Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP), was able to help Steven get started by covering tuition costs, providing on-campus housing and meals, and offering career coaching guidance to ensure that he stayed on course throughout his studies. He credits the program’s scholarships for giving him the opportunity to enter Terra State shortly after he graduated with his high school diploma from Huron.
“The scholarships have really helped out, and it’s a gateway for me to do what I want to do,” Steven said. “I didn’t know how to go about it at first and it definitely made it a lot easier.”
Steven also credited GLCAP Career Coach Lucille Phillips with helping him complete his studies.
“She definitely kept me on track, that’s for sure,” he said. “She’s just super helpful in general.”
Now that he has his certification, Steven plans on continuing his education at Terra State to earn his associate degree. He then wants to transfer to the Cleveland Institute of Art to earn his bachelor’s degree in game design.
In addition to interactive media, students in the Job Corps Scholars program can study for multiple career options in healthcare, skilled trades, and business. The program offers up to $6,000 in tuition assistance as well as supportive services. Job Corps Scholars is available to young adults ages 16-24 who meet income guidelines and other eligibility requirements.
